Got my Baja 5b today. Went through all nuts and bolt to check if they were tightened. Checked the diff if it had oil in it (some new owners didn't ) and checked the shocks for air. All assembled back together. Mounted the Spektrum DX receiver and adjusted all settings. The poor thing is now charging the Intellec 4200mAh humppack (takes some time for the first trickle charge ). So tomorrow I'm ready for the maiden flight (sorry, baja's need to fly).

At first I put my antenna under the body and the top strapped to the roll cage. But there was too much interference so I put back the antenna tube. Also run a Spektrum and this is the reciver with the long antenna.
After bashing around this afternoon I managed to take so much sand home in my Baja, I was able to fill a little bucket of the kids.

I let it dry for a few hours (nice warm air heater) and then most of the dried sand I can blow away with a compressor. Only the hidden spots I clean with a little paintbrush. No WD40 for me, it smells bad and is oily so the dirt (chalk like) sticks on even more the next bash.

Yep, read a lot of forums with all the pro's and con's. But once you've touched the Baja you're sold. I had the change to visit someone who owned a Baja and was cleaning it. So I had a close look on all bits and pieces and it looked high quality.

@no1ice: You're right, the Baja doesn't need a glowpug driver. Just kiddin'... :D
@Chris: Not stones but small shells. The sand we drive on comes from the sea (new construction site with 3 meters of sand added on top of the original land). After the first bash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzvMW-VErEQ) the entire pullstarter was filles with sand and crushed shells. I'm not sure if the maze will prevent sand from entering the starter, but it will keep the shells away. By closing the side pods as well it's even harder for the sand to reach the starter.

The Baja and Savage (or any other nitro powered car) are like comparing apples and cows (or Vauxhall and Ferrari if you like). :D They are so different in handling, adjusting, tuning and maintenance... Okay the only equal thing is you need to be handy to do the maintenance and tuning and the control electronics are the same. But that's it.
I still have my Savage and love it just as much as the Baja or my XRay M18T (for indoor carpet racing) and M18MT (for outdoor fun at the local playground).
Chris
13-01-2007, 10:58 PM
Great.. Do you find though, that you pick up your baja rather than one of the nitro models..
They are all great in the right place.I agree.I`m just trying to find out if deep down the Baja is more fun.
P.s. I haven`t got one ,but I think everyone on this forum would like one as well as their nitro models.....(I know I would but the missus might leave me if I come home with one of them)
Sleurhutje
14-01-2007, 10:51 PM
You can't do proper backflips (or forward) with the Baja. Once it takes off, it's hard to control anymore, unlike nitro 4WD's like the Savage. As a matter of fact, when the Baja is going to land with a nose dive, I just pull full throttle in a reflex to turn it backward. But it doesn't help anything. It's just a very hard landing with the nose in the ground. Also the Savage would jump much higher on the same ramp. So on the other hand, at half throttle the Baja jumps really far. At full throttle I made it up to 8 meters right now.
Look here on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l1M7VV5b6Q) for todays bash with my Baja. I certainly need a widescreen camcorder because the Baja jumps (or lands) out of sight. :D Made about 100 jumps like that and all that "broke" was the c-clip of the front wheel hub come off. Lucky enough the bearings were still in de c-hubs (didn't have any spares anymore). After putting a new c-clip on, bashing went. Also bashe my Savage, just like half the time (not on this movie clip, it's not my Savage SS at the beginning).
chris13
15-01-2007, 05:09 PM
you obviously need some jumping help, add me on msn and ill tell you
Sleurhutje
15-01-2007, 05:16 PM
No, I know how to control the poor thing in the air (and before take off). But if you do some bashing, you got to do some real bashing. Who cares about the landing? Did you make 5 subsequent rolls over the length of the car. I did... :D Did you try to fly as far as possible upside down? I did... :( (not that good for your flywheel/cooling fan because loads of sand comes through the cooling fins of the engine).
Next vid will be loaded with these "stunts". As proof that the Baja is much stronger than FG Marders or MT's.

Nope, the 40-series has half the amount of paddles and are too wide. These are the "normal" Savage/T-Maxx tires (#1084). It's a tight fit for sure. You need four hands to pull them over the inserts. :D

And if you have had a look at the vids on the HPI site, I don't think the engine is stock CY23cc. It does pull wheelies on demand.

LOL, I've noticed most of the forum member are still going to school or at the point of starting a career. The people that spend lots of money for a new (and bigger) car and exclusive hop-ups have a descend job (or sponsors like their parents or LHS :D). So a wise lesson: If you want to drive a Baja with hop-ups, finish your school. Don't drop out early (or search eBay for new parents). ;)

Received my new exhaust from DDM (http://www.davesmotors.com) today. Also an extra silencer to make the ADA Racing Stalker exhaust even more quite. It even produces less noise than the stock exhaust but has much more power on the low RPM. If my brother has some time left he will weld a manifold so the silencer will be below the rear wing.
Also received many more parts like the shockwears, extra front wheel hubs (to be mounted with a bolt instead of a C-clip), Vertigo rear axle extenders and some more spare parts.

It's like comparing cows with apples. :D
As far as I have seen the stock Baja is much more riggid than the FG MT. Common problem on the stock FG is the adjustment rod of the suspension arms breaking loose when jumping, so your first expensive hop-up would be alloy suspension arms. You also need a tougher diff casing (the stock one dents very easily and your spider gears get stuck). Also check the price of a Ready-to-Run FG MT, the basic car is pretty cheap, but you also need some servo's, battery pack and so on.
For fun bashing, I would go for the Baja, for racing... Difficult choice, probably none and choose for the Hormann MT (has everything in alloy, so no hop-ups needen).

you pay for what you get, the baja is the best entry 1/5th scale model then theres the mcd race runners witch are 4wd but are way more expensive because of this, the mcd's are only really for racing.

Yep, the engine is still stock 23cc Fuelie. I just have the Baja for 4 weeks now. The stock exhaust sucks (instead of blowing), so the first and most important hop-up is a new exhaust. The X-Can (or slightly bigger Stalker I have) is great for bashing because it sits between the roll cage and is somewhat protected. For real power go for the JetPro V2 or V3. But the JetPro weights almost a kilo, so the Baja almost tilts backward by the weight :D.
I don't need that much power as in Chris' movie. We run in a very sandy terrain and if there's too much power, the wheels dig in and you're stuck. I'll try the exhaust this weekend. Vid's will follow.

I've seen several Baja's doing wheelies. And also strip their Dirt Buster tires in no time. Within a few weeks HPI starts selling the on-road Tarmac Busters (introduced on the RCX in the US and the ITF in Germany). And probably also their own exhaust and paddle tires (just too late for me  ).

And Baja's chassis is much heavier, especially on the front compared to a Marder.

Yippee... I did it, finally something broke on my Baja. After loosing a c-clips (and the wheels) four times, a roll became fatal for one of the shocks and bead lock. The shock shaft broke and the rim hit the hub very hard and broke off a part of the bead lock.
And the new ADA Racing Stalker exhaust is one of a kind. So quite and so much more power. With a complete stock Baja except the Proline Paddles and Stalker exhaust, it's near pulling wheelies. At take of at about 8000 RPM the Baja jumps away and keeps the front wheels barely on the ground (causing lots of understear on high speed cornering  ). So I'm thinking of mounting a sway bar on the front to prevent the lifting of the inner front wheel.

Like chris13 says: NO. :D It took 4 weeks to break anything (except the front wheel c-clips jumping off). Well, that the front shock is the winning part, is not that strange. If you land on your front wheel, coming from about 2 meters high, 8 meters far and at full speed. Yes, something has to break. But the jump was good enough foor many "ooooh's" and "aaaah's". I dared the FG MT's drivers to do it better, but they wouldn't even try. :p
HPI gives you two new shock shafts when you buy a Baja, so it's a known thing they would break sometime. And by now, the shock is already repaired.

well the only way anything breaks is if you do as Sleurhutje did or forget to put the bolt in on the steering rack then the front right wheel come disscontedted to the steering when you crash it into a thorn bush going full chat up a hill

Solved the brake drag problem. Due to the wet conditions the brake pads didin't free the brake disk properly. I've added two small springs on the hinge pins of the brake pads so the pads are pushed from the disk (normally the disk does this but is to little to do it properly). The springs are pretty weak and came from a throttle/brake mod of a Savage. The length is about 1.5mm longer than the space between the pads. Because they are weak, they don't affect the braking by teh servo and still blocks the wheels.

No it wasn't. Since it was raining we went to an old horse riding school that's abandoned for about 6 years. So the roof wasn't exactly watertight and there was a small pool of mud in the middle (most FG drivers did drive around it, but hey, it's a Baja...). Once you got through the mud all stuff got stuck on the Baja and at some point you couldn't even see it due to the perfect camo. :D Vid of this afternoon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXulCeHemlo)

Today, we went for a funday bash with lots of big scales (mostly FG MTs, Marders, Hörmanns, Leopard etc. and 3 Bajas). All took place at a tarmac factory where's tons of sand, large flat areas and piles of rocks (grinded tarmac). The perfect place to do a hill climb competition.
So what you need is a huge pile of rocks, put a pole at the top (23 meters high) and challenge everyone to do the quickest round from the bottom to the top, around the pole and back without rolling down. (the pile is in the background of my Baja).
http://www.xs4all.nl/~koeien/HPI/baja5b_hill_climb1.jpg
The use a good quality digital camera and risk your life and lenses to take some nice shots. Rocks were flying all over the place and I was the only one with paddles.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~koeien/HPI/baja5b_hill_climb2.jpg
As where the othe tires got stuck or didn't have any grip, the paddles just flew the Baja to the top and back. It was even possible to stop half was and regain speed on the hill without any problems.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~koeien/HPI/baja5b_hill_climb3.jpg
And the lucky winner (me :) ) got a big can of Heineken (or was it Heine-Can instead of an X-Can).

Here's a pic of my Bajas. The one on the left is stock 23cc with a DDM Dominator pipe on it. The one on the right is 26cc tuned, with a custom made, tuned, exhaust.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a44/Bandit9/Pair1.jpg
I'd only have a nitro now to race. I'd even consider selling a Baja just to get one, as there aren't many places or clubs that run 1/5th scale offroad.
To run one on a 1/10th offroad track takes some doing and doesn't give the Baja potential to show what it can do.
BMX tracks are non existant where I live....
Quick vid of the stock one.... More tarmac than car. Not easy to keep one eye on the screen of your phone while watching where the car is going.........

Started building saturdaymorning 10 o'clock sharp till 3.30 saturdaynight, continued sundaymorning 10 o'clock and finished the build by 5 in the afternoon. I didn't come across any difficulties during the build. Made some modifications straight away though. Meshed the bottom and sides of the engine, replaced the brake spring with a piece of fueltube, positioned two small springs between the brakepads.

Just now I went through the break in procedure and this thing really is incredible! The looks, the power, the stance, the attention you get... I can go on for hours but it still wouldn't do justice to describe how happy I am with this piece of kit! Same goes for the DX3R, incredible radio! Real quick response, nice grip, really light and no glitching, interference whatsoever.
Still waiting for my led-kit and side windows.
Just finished painting the shell. Took some shots before applying the decals, hope you guys like it!

I used masking tape, handcut everything, and painted the whole shell with Tamiya rattlecans. The top colour is an iridescent gold/purple PS-47 that shifts colour depending on the light. Up front I painted a simplified bull, with three stars above it. The bull and the stars are incorporated in our city's emblem. The sides say Baja SS for those who can't read it. Up front is my signature. Please tell me what you guys think! Cheers, Chris

Hello Gents, and Ladie's.
Just got a Baja SS. No need for a picture as its totally standard :)
The Baja has been bought to race, and race hard, it will be up against the best cars and drivers in the UK, including National BRCA official meetings, and going straight in to a winter series.
I have not yet driven, or set up the car. I will keep you posted on how things go.

How can you tell which is clone? I was looking at few on ebay and i'm afraid of being scammed.
is it a clone, the only thing i can see that differs from mine is the spark plug cover, pull start handel, and the gas cap and the shiney front surport brase also the shock adjusters have a different nurling on them. thing that confuses me is it has dirt busters? but im realy not sure? nice car all the same though :)
fallaci - the way you can tell if its a clone, it will not have hpi stamped anywhere on it, however this might be difficult as parts are interchainagable, you could also tell from the manual.

Hi All!
Fresh to the forum, and a few years away from RC fun (did sombody say Hornet/boomerang/clodbuster, now i feel old)
I`ve been looking at a Baja for a while now (friends recommendations, great looks and general good reviews and time to ditch those pesky batteries), and finally managed to pick one up. Not having the spare cash at the moment to get a spanky new 5T, i found a nice second hand 5b that appears quite well looked after by the previous owner, and looks mostly standard from what i can see.
Bang went my Sunday morning lie in as wanted to be up early to try her out, and all i can say is i`m now hooked!
2 hours of fun and back home now to clean her up, I`m already planning paint schemes and pimp-up parts, pay day seems so far away. :D

You tend to get what you pay for with HPi,
they are great fun and priced well compared to other makers IMHO.
The 5T is superb to drive, they are tough, give excellent reliabilty and look fantastic.
Running on normal unleaded petrol,a tank full of fuel gives well over 45 minutes run times.
All good stuff

Hi Peter,
yes, sadly the 5b got cloned. There has been many discussions about them, with many claims good and bad.The threads tend to go round and round and tend to just end up in huge arguments.
I have seen these cloned cheap 5b`s,they look almost exactly the same, but from what i have actually seen, the parts are made from inferior materials, both the alloy and plastic parts are sub standard, the oils etc are very poor quality.
The truth is IMHO "you get what you pay for"
I would only recomend buying genuine HPi cars and parts.
As well as being inferior products, morally the cloning of someone elses products and trying to flood the market with rubbish i find abhorrent.
I hope that answers your question.
BR,
Simon.
