View Full Version : Please Help!! Cluch Bell Shredded on RTR 3!

Hi
My clutch Bell has shredded in my RTR 3. It’s the stock 18 tooth so where can l order a new one. Or one that gives more speed and will fit just as easy. Just so that you all know there are small metal fragments all over my car and it will not go above about 2mph because it just spins! Also could this have damaged my spur gear as there are scraps on it? It’s the single speed.
Cheers
Adam

Whoops forgot to ask, how much will it cost?
Thanks

You stripped the metal clutch bell and the plastic spur gear is still all right?
Search on here for the parts: www.towerhobbies.com

Hi
If l order a spur gear with more teeth will it make it go faster? And will it fit to my 18 tooth cluch bell? Or will l need to do some more modding?
Cheers

I dont think it does, if you get a smaller one it will go faster.
The rule is the bigger the clutch bell the more speed, but you lose acceleration, so to compensate you get a smaller spur gear.
If you have adjustable engine mounts you can fit almost any gear combo. But i would stick with a 18t.
Better still get ya self a 2 speed, then you have lots of options for gearing :D

Typo? A smaller spur gear will decrease acceleration and increase top speed as well as a bigger clutch bell. Oh, do you mean compensate for the size?
Yes, you do need the engine mounts, the 4$ ones (9$ at my LHS) are all right.

I mean a bigger clutch bell will increase top end at a loss of acceleration so to compensate you get a smaller spur gear to keep the same acceleration. Is that right ??

doesnt really fighure, unfortunately you can only get more top end or more acceleration with single speed, to do both go for the 2 speed.
To get a bigger cluth bell you will need the basic adjustable engine mount so you can mesh the spur / clutch bell correctly, all in stock by the way

Hi
Will l get a cluch bell with the 2 speed, if so l will order a 2 speed.

Yep you will and best of all, since the pinion gears are threaded, you'll only have to replace the broken pinion gear instead of the whole clutch bell when you do this again :p.
Did you figure out why your clutchbell got stripped but not your spur gear? Perhaps I'm just in a thick mood but that is rather worrying (sorry if its pointed out above, as I said, I'm definately in thicko mode today).

I had the same problem with my rtr 3's clutch bell...the metal pieces fell out of it everytime i ran the car...a lot of it...but after i took it out and put it back together again it was fixed but i didn't know how it was fixed, because the lhs put it back together for me.

Yes, 2 speed comes with the bell (2 gears on it) as a note, i have yet to come across this problem of the standard one stripping

No, a smaller spur gear will increase top speed even more at greater loss of acceleration.
Think about it, in the time the clutch bell spins once, a smaller spur gear will spin more than a bigger one, giving higher rev -> more top end, worse acceleration.

Hi
Thanks for info everyone. How fast will my car be going with 2 speed, Type SS header and Big CEN Air filter?

Hi
While fitting my 2 speed l found out the course of the problem. One on the screws that holds the engine on had come off and the other 3 were not 2 tight, so the whole engine had moved a little. Causing the gears to shred a bit. But once l had tightened them they looked fine. Oh well…

You are using "threadlock" on you engine screws ??
You need to use this to make the vibrations from the engine dont "back" the screws off.
Just a thought

Umm, I still can't see why the clutch bell's metal teeth give away rather than the spur gear's plastic teeth
If you're not using thread lock on the engine screws (because you could strip "filed" screws when trying to take them out), make sure you tighten them before every single run!
As well as some other screws on the car, those can work themselves loose in a few runs.

I agree with H-Trainer (wow there's a first H!! :D )
When I first put the Novarossi CX12 in my RS4/2 there was a slight offset problem with the crank which knocked the meshing out ever so slightly (similar to the engine moving). On it's first high speed run the car took off like a bat out of hell, changed to 2nd and..........stopped with the engine still running. It would still rev but not move. When I took the shell off the spur gear was like a perfect circle - not one single tooth left on it!!! - but the clutch bell was totally unharmed. It would appear logical that the harder steel clutch bell would shred the softer spur every time. Not sure what happened with yours Adam!

No, your gear ratio will be about the same. Think about it.

To clarify this once more: A bigger clutch bell gives you taller gearing. A smaller spur gear gives you taller gearing as well. So with a bigger CB and smaller SG, you'll get a lot higher top speed and sacrify a lot of acceleration (depending on the size difference and if the engine can rev up).
