Savage spur gear and clutch bell help.

Hi, I have a savage 4.1 and yesterday I was installing some new brakes and I thought i would put the free racing spur gear (47T) and vented, racing 15T clutch bell. These CAME free, (as in offer) with the savage 4.1

However they are too small. Upon putting it back together I realised that 15T clutch bell is too small for the racing 47T spur gear. However the savage does come with a 18T clutch bell on which the cogs physically go out more, so that there is a clear (and good, tested) mesh between the 47T spur and 18T clutch bell.

is it supposed to be like this, because it seems odd HPI would give a racing spur gear that doesn't fit the racing clutch bell.

All clutchbells will work with all spur gears however some combinations require you to purchase an adjustable engine mount or, as I've done on occasion, enlarge the mounting holes and move the existing mount.

ok. Thanks. It just seems odd, the two racing spur gear and clutch bell don't actually work with each other.

Is there anything wrong with using a racing spur gear with a 18T clutch bell??

Nothing at all. The 18T/47T is a popular combo designed to get a good top speed out of your truck. In return you need to accept that you've sacrificed some low end torque and acceleration.

ahh alright. So you could just clarify,

Smaller clutch bell (teeth) faster acceleration, less speed
bigger clutch bell, slower acceleration, more speed
and
smaller spur gear, fast acceleration, less speed,
bigger spur gear, slower acceleration, more speed.???

Not quite.

Less teeth on cluchbell = better acceleration & low end torque
More teeth on clutchbell = faster top end, loss of acceleration.

More teeth on spur gear = better acceleration & low end torque
Less teeth on spur gear = faster top end, loss of acceleration.

So the fastest combo currently available is a 20T clutchbell and a 47T spur and the one giving the best acceleration/low end torque is a 12T clutchbell and a 52T spur.

There are aftermarket options which can push these ratios even further.
